Types of Criminal Cases That I Handle
In nearly twenty years of handling Criminal Cases, I have run across almost every charge you could imagine. Having found the range of cases I enjoy handling the most, I do not accept cases that are called “Capital Offenses,” meaning things like Homicide, 1st degree Criminal Sexual Conduct (Rape), or Kidnapping. These cases frequently do and should go to trial, and ought properly be handled by lawyers who spend their time trying such cases regularly.
Instead, I prefer to handle what I call “light to medium” severity cases, meaning everything from simple Misdemeanors through 20-year Felonies. This most often pairs me with a client that I like and to whom I can relate. The first phone call to my office allows both the potential client and I to figure out if we see eye-to-eye and if our personalities “mesh” in a way where we both feel comfortable. I think this is a very important step for the both the Attorney and the potential client. From the Attorney’s point of view, it’s better to lose a potential client with unreasonable expectations rather than get involved in a mutually unpleasant situation. From the client’s point of view, they get to determine if the Attorney is someone with whom they can talk to, and feel good about. The hard truth is that if you are going to give money to someone, or take it from someone, you had better start that relationship feeling confident, good and secure about it.
Sometimes, I’m hired by parents for their child, or a wife for her husband. I enjoy conversing with people in just about any situation, so my line of work is perfect for me. Sometimes I have people tell me that other lawyers they spoke with were impatient, not talkative, rude, or simply told them to come in with a wad of money, and they thank me for being the first to really spend the time to talk to them and answer their questions. I cannot figure out how anyone could expect to run a practice with a disagreeable personality. I can only think that if that’s your first impression of someone, then your first instinct better be to run!
